Cosas cubanas muy molestas parte 2//Very annoying Cuban things part 2

 Hace unos días escribí un texto sobre determinados hábitos que tenemos en "Cubita la bella" y que las personas de fuera del país pueden encontrar molestos o extraños. Me gustó mucho hacerlo, es divertido analizar nuestras costumbres y ver como: cosas que para nosotros en Cuba son normales a otras nacionalidades las pondrían en coma. 

A few days ago I wrote a text about certain habits that we have in "Cubita la bella" and that people from outside the country may find annoying or strange. I really liked doing it, it's fun to analyze our customs and see how: things that for us in Cuba are normal would put other nationalities in a coma.

Graciosamente mi misma condición de nacional que nunca ha dejado la isla es lo que me dificulta identificar esas cosillas que no son habituales en otros lados. Hace un tiempo me habían hablado sobre Reddit y decidí crearme un cuenta y hacer una de mis actividades favoritas : preguntar. Tras leer unas cuantas anécdotas, analizar las respuestas que recibí y ver que cosas se repetían les vengo hoy con mi segunda parte.

Funny enough, my very status as a national who has never left the island is what makes it difficult for me to identify those little things that are not common elsewhere. A while ago I had been told about Reddit and I decided to create an account and do one of my favorite activities: ask questions. After reading a few anecdotes, analyzing the responses I received and seeing what things were repeated, I come to you today with my second part

1 . Llegar tarde es llegar temprano.

Aquí tengo que hacer una salvedad yo no soy de llegar tarde, yo soy esa persona que se levanta a las 4 a.m para estar en un lugar a las 7 a.m pero quedé contigo a las 8 a.m 😅 . Detesto las llegadas tardes pero como bien dijo Darelia Díaz Borrero la impuntualidad se ha vuelto un padecimiento nacional . Muchas son las razones que uno puede dar para excusar este comportamiento- el problema innegable del transporte publico como una de ellos- pero la principal es que , a modo general, no existe una cultura de respeto hacia el tiempo ajeno.

1 . Being late is being early.

Here I have to make a something clear, I am not one to arrive late, I am that person who gets up at 4 a.m. to be somewhere at 7 a.m. but I am actually meeting you at 8 a.m. 😅. I hate late arrivals but as Darelia Díaz Borrero said, tardiness has become a national illness. There are many reasons one can give to excuse this behavior - the undeniable problem of public transportation being one of them - but the main one is that, in general, there is no culture of respect for other people's time.

2. El espacio personal no es necesario.

Tengo una amiga que odia "el contacto físico innecesario" ... ella no es muy feliz viviendo aquí. Desde una guagua REPLETA de personas - en la cual el sudor de alguien que no conoces te va a caer en el brazo- hasta una abuela desconocida tocándote el brazo en medio de la calle antes de preguntarte una dirección. Las culturas latinas son famosas por ser muy cálidas y pasa lo mismo con las caribeñas, mezclas eso y obtienes la tradición cubana de dar un abrazo y un beso en la mejilla antes de decir "mucho gusto me llamo....". Así que sí, debes de saber que no hay respeto por el espacio personal y te va tocar  a ti establecer los límites porque a modo general no están muy claros.

2. Personal space is not necessary.

I have a friend who hates "unnecessary physical contact"...she is not very happy living here. From a bus FULL of people - in which the sweat of someone you don't know is going to fall on your arm - to an unknown grandmother touching your arm in the middle of the street before asking you for directions. Latin cultures are famous for being very "warm" and the same thing happens with Caribbean cultures, you mix that and you get the Cuban tradition of giving a hug and a kiss on the cheek before saying "great pleasure, my name is...". So yes, you should know that there is no respect for personal space and it will be up to you to establish the limits because in general they are not very clear.

3. Eso no es un piropo.

No hay una forma fácil de decir esto así que: el 90 % de los piropos cubanos son considerados acoso en otros países 😂 Aunque ya cada vez se ve menos durante mucho tiempo era común que un piropo viniera acompañado de tocarte la mano o el pelo (en el mejor de los casos). Es cierto que antes el piropo era casi una forma de arte pero ya no es el caso. Dentro de mis piropos (de los antiguos) favoritos están : 

Si cocinas como caminas, me como hasta la raspa.

Todo eso que Dios te dio, que San Pedro te lo bendiga

El perfume bueno viene en frascos chiquitos (mi favorito porque soy bien bajita )

Por desgracia ,aunque el cubano tiene su arte a la hora de ingeniar piropos, el relajito está siendo con desorden .  La creatividad se ha convertido en seudopiropos que caen fácilmente en terreno de lo ofensivo, grotesco y vulgar. Así que...prepárense.

3. That's not a compliment.

There is no easy way to say this so: 90% of Cuban compliments are considered harassment in other countries 😂 Although it is seen less and less, for a long time it was common for a compliment to come accompanied by touching your hand or hair ( in the best case). It is true that before the compliment was almost an art form but that is no longer the case. Among my favorite compliments (of the old ones) are: 

If you cook like you walk, I'll eat even the skin.

All that God gave you, may Saint Peter bless it.

Good perfume comes in small bottles (my favorite because I'm very short)

Unfortunately, although we Cuban have a certain art when it comes to coming up with compliments, the party is being made without any order.  Creativity has become into pseudo-compliments that easily fall into the realm of the offensive, grotesque and vulgar. So...get ready.

Estos son algunos hábitos cubanos que puede que te sorprendan. Recuerda que si llegan tarde, te abrazan y te dicen que estás buenísimo .... es un cubano diciéndote te quiero ¡Hasta la próxima aventura!

These are some Cuban habits that may surprise you. Remember that if they arrive late, they hug you and tell you that you are great.... it's a Cuban saying I love you. See you next adventure!
